It seems like Microban is everywhere today; it's showing up in everything from kitchen countertops to hot tub shells. Incase you're new to Microban, it's a material being built into products during the production period to provide "antimicrobial product protection"--basically it inhibits the growth of organisms that can stain materials and even cause illness. But what does this have to do with hot tubs, you wonder? Well portable hot tubs and spas are among the newest products receiving Microban technology. Specifically, it's the shells that are getting the treatment. Lucite acrylic is the forerunner and is being used in hot tubs from companies like Master Spas and Baja Spas.
According to the hot tub manufacturers, the Microban-treated Lucite acrylic lasts for the lifetime of the spa. Scratching or chipping of the Lucite shell won't matter, because the antimicrobial is built-in; it's not something that's simply painted on to the exterior. It doesn't affect chemical balancing; it simply exists and gives you peace of mind, knowing that your hot tub has an extra layer of protection from microbes.
